Well, this was an unexpected but solid punch to the gut, especially with the musical accompaniment (as provided by the link). Mmmph, there is a lot to be admired and explore in this picture, such as the intense and brightly-saturated nature of the color work here, as the directed use of sunlight (rising or falling) really provides a hotter, orange-yellow glare which focuses the viewer’s eyes and mind to the main focus, which is without question, Toffee.

And of course, Toffee has been a focus in this AU, but especially so in this context, as we’re pretty much at the start of his story, especially one so small and so young, that the wee babby Septarian looks very akin to one of Earth’s lizards. A small, and vulnerable little thing with such wispy but likely downy soft crest of hair, that adorable little forked tongue, and of course, those bright, intelligent golden eyes, which gleam and shimmer and stare so intently like the sun…likely burning into a guilty heart.

And that’s other matter, as the matter of light and shadow sources in this piece really show how much the truth, when revealed and brought to the light, cuts through whatever defenses and distractions Eclipsa might’ve put up. A moment of day to day, cleaning oneself of the past and returning to start or end the day (again limited by the information of the scene to draw from in terms of time), and move on, a duller and grayed-out palette of purple that lingers in Eclipsa’s world, until brought closer to the source of light, where a basking little Toffee is of course enjoying the warmth and resting…and in company of Glossaryk, whose mood is…complicated, as to be expected of this being who wields plenty of power and knowledge, but refuses to directly intervene, serving the queen as well as some secret purpose.

But despite roles and powers, he is but a minor player in this scene, as Eclipsa (as her shown in her range of expressive emotion as she doesn’t look like the eccentric Mary Poppins-esque character we’ve known her, but as a truly devastated and vulnerable young woman, looking as lost and heart-broken as someone who’d been put in a difficult postion and made a horrible mistake…and will have to live with the consequences, which one can be plainly shown by the tell-tale signs and ‘price’ of a very familiar (to the fandom community, I mean) spell. Its apparent recent use, Eclipsa’s reaction and the presence of the very young Toffee, can only lead to a very…very dark conclusion…of what may have happened to the young Septarian’s life…and loved ones…

This…this is genuinely intriguing an approach that leaves me further invested n the AU’s story but also so very cutting to the deep, my throat feeling as I write this. I sympathize greatly with Eclipsa and of course, the wee babby Toffee, as this is tragic for them both, but especially to Eclipsa…because I can only imagine how much guilt she must feel…and self-loathing, as in that instance, what makes her any less different then any previous Butterfly princess and queen, when it comes to ‘dealing’ with monsters…

*Deep breath, exhale* Damn, this is really dark to think on as my mind is putting in pieces and scenes only merely implied by these six panels, but its really fucking me up, to be honest and I do apologize for my use of strong language, but to get that from six panels is really impressive. This is some of your best work yet, Kenn, and I can only hope that you’re doing alright, as this is drawing on some real potent emotion and energy. I hope things are better on your end and hope you’re taking good care now.

Intensely colorful work here, Kenn. Really invokes with me a very strong, early to mid 90s aesthetic, like something perfect for an album cover, or the cover a Vertigo comic book. The rough, ‘sketchy’ texture of the line-work and shading, atop the patchy palette work of colors, does really hit that note of ‘drug influence’ you mention in the tags.

The influenced being here, of course, Toffee, who seems to have taken a bit too much if the bleeding nose and gums are any indicator, as well as that look in his eyes…normally, I’d be pleased to see that look and smile clearly pointed in Rasticore’s direction (which by the way, love the approach of casting him in shadow, I’m curious if its to cast Rast in a rather dark mood, or to ‘highlight’ the focus, which is of course, Toffee~), but with the questionable state of mind and being of the rather ‘high as a kite’ Septarian, I can only foresee tears and blood in the future…

Fantastic piece,and using the music recommendation in the tags of yours, only adds to the imaginative experience. Great work Kenn =D!

In the answer to one repost earlier I already said that I have some doubts in the world perception of this robo-mother. «The point is that, like any modern device, robots can have factory settings (basic set of functions, knowledge, programs) and user settings (additional files, language and time settings, choice of behavior model, a specific task and, perhaps, even disabling of some factory functions). By the way, Olga’s “contemptuous attitude” to the Heinous’s/Meteora’s monster part could also be part of the “user settings” (If the customer/user was Shastacan – he could have put these settings in this model of the robo-mother).»

So, it is also possible that even her own name “Olga” may not be quite her own name, but rather the name of the model. (For example, robo-mothers made for education of the prince and princesses was called “Olga”, for the education of young countesses/counts – “Elizabeth,” children of the artists – “Valentina”, and etc.) and that could lead that Olga’s perception of word “heinos” as the girl’s name may not have been a consequence of her “nasty nature” or “contempt for the monsters” (as they used to say in the last season rich monsters like “king pigeon” were not considered as something bad, and this means monster princess couldn’t be something “improper” for robo-mothers), but her inexperience (perhaps she was just a newby) and user settings of Shastacan.

By the way, and therefore laughing of other Robo-mothers on that Olga could take place not because the ward of our Olga didn’t meet the “high standards”, but because the task of Olga (to raise from the half-monster a NOT half-monster) itself was illogical and ineffective (while robots as a “creatures of a function”, first of all evaluate the result of the “child education”, but not the child itself).

I understand that it looks like I’m trying to justify Olga, which for this series could be way too strange (most likely, this robo-mother will not receive further development in the series and stay minor villain), but the theme of binding “live characters” to robots and how it is combined with their “mechanical” nature is still very interesting for me.

In my opinion, it might as well be that Olga is evil not because she has a bad character, but because he is not living at all, she has a program – a function that she performs. Despite my usual desire to fit the human perception of the world into everything, it is rather difficult but still possible to imagine creatures, whose perception is significantly different from human’s (including usual concept of “morality” and “justice”) and that gives just a tremendous space for creativity and imagination

P.S.-the Comparison may seem too rough, but any available handy gadget (whether it’s a phone, laptop, watch, etc.) will not somehow evaluate the processes it performs, as well as whether it wouldn’t care if it used for good or evil (and who exactly uses it). It has a task and the necessity to perform it (and if it didn’t work – try again until it does… or until an update will come if the current version of the program is not able to perform the task) … and the emergence of artificial intelligence, in my understanding, is not just give a machine feelings (it’s not good, and not bad either… it’s just a variant opportunity, that machine could choose for itself), but a choice. AI allows a machine to update itself when it needs (without including user), to take care of its own safety (if a certain “solution” of a certain “problem” can lead to the destruction of the machine, and therefore – the inability to solve further “problems”), to determine the order of tasks and, in the future, to set a task itself.

Having read all the previous responses you’ve posted concerning robo-mothers, both in terms of Olga (where ‘her’ programming is dictated by her pre-established internal commands as well as her ‘user settings’) and Bobipsa (where her programming is partially reset to factory defaults and a conflict induced by said defaults not being to follow the improperly input user settings, leading a necessary and logical divergence until producing what can be looked on as an unbound A.I.), I’m pleased to see that its something that has sparked not just further thought and development, but a very meaningful, visual reflection of what an upbringing / programming could produce.

I mean this because, by taking into consideration the idea of robo-mothers in the context of this universe, Olga was only in the technical sense wrong, as you make it quite clear, that she’s isn’t entirely of her own free-will because well, she is but a tool not a full sentient being. She follows as she is programmed, and though an effective and precise machine, capable of adapting to any situation and problem, that adaptability and effectiveness is mired and flawed greatly by poor set commands…and with a character like King Shastacan, someone whose ignorance knows no bounds and likely treats those socially lower then them worse then machines, likely expects a robo-mother to know exactly what they mean, no matter how vague or poorly worded…

But unlike say, a living organic nursemaid, which would likely have the same knowledge of raising a child as a robo-mother, but has enough self-awareness and individuality to know what is right and wrong to raise a child. One with the genuine abhorrence to monsters, would likely treat Meteora in the same manner as Olga, theoretically worse but it would be out of genuine cruelty. As you pointed out, Olga was not capable of that function, but because of what was ‘expected’ of her was left unsaid, and given only so much direction, it lead to the life that was Meteora…and if anything, it was that poorly provided programming and settings which I feel didn’t help produce a princess, but in the end, it created another Olga. Limited as she was, Olga did as expected and succeeded in only in producing a flesh and blood copy of herself…

I mean, its perfectly captured in this image, as Miss Heinous stands back to back with her ‘creator’, Olga, their looks nearly identical from an organic/inorganic stand point (especially with the heavy use of purple hues, which such an important shade for their characters), both being (as you had dubbed them) “Creatures Of A Function”.

Their functions are to teach what proper princesses are and whats to be expected from them. And they do so by taking young girls, living beings with hopes, dreams, emotions, and will. And they take those away, reprogramming them into robots of flesh and blood, carrying out a solitary function, to be ‘perfect princesses’. But they become less instead of more, nothing more then pretty figureheads and the ‘image’ of royalty. And what would you expect, from two Creatures With A Function who are both improperly programmed to truly carry out their ‘intended’ functions. To Olga, its the user settings, and to Heinous, it is her effort to attain Olga’s level of control and professionalism expected of a robotic entity, impossible to someone who still retains emotions and feelings.

Both are incapable of achieving what either want or expected to complete, and there standing in the back, is St.Olga’s Reform School For Wayward Princesses, looming darkly and that great clock tower, looking a great cyclopian eye, judging them, and being never far from their minds, as this was where they ‘belonged’ now.

A few sketches in continuation of metal AU and story about what would happen if Bobipsa raised Heinous (yeah, ‘cause it would be in Bobip’s style to name a child like that for the sake of conformity to the surrounding villains)? How would Bobipsa even look like?

So this is how the “broken” evil version of Robo-mom appeared. It believes that “the best way to get parents to value their child is to kidnap it and set a price.” After one terrible accident with child entrusted to her, Bobipsa was literally broken, left in scrap yard waiting for her end in smelting furnace, but something went wrong… And then that “something”, with the help of one disaffected one-eyed cyborg, gathered from the trash way better and more powerful body for itself, found a few like-minded robots, the vehicles and went to get her revenge.

What about the whole “eating childrens” thing and robots on “bio-fuel”, I’d like to tell, but that’s a story for another time. The things Bobipsa was doing with children are not related to “eating” anything.

However, when she stole Meteora/Heinous from St. Olga’s (where Shastacan “threw away” the child), and then came to the king demanding the ransom (threatening that she could eat “that lil monster cub”, if the pay wasn’t high enough), Shastacan said immediately that he was ready to even pay over for such an effective way to get rid from “Heinous”. Therefore, Bobip has taken a strategically correct decision — to leave the child in her band and “shake from Shasty” a tidy sum each month for her silence about “this wonderful “skeleton” in Butterfly’s family closet”. Of course, after that Bobipsa’s problems grew up a little, but the fun she has increased too… especially, when she found out, that this small “meatloaf with tail” is able to take care of herself quite effectively if she feels a “spiritual hunger”.

I honestly don’t know where to start, because I’m pleased to read some further backstory and expansion on the Metal AU, but on the other hand, I’m just holding back the urge to coo over little Meteora! Oh, seeing those nap-deprived expressions on her , and the priceless stance of ‘120% Percent DONE with all this noisy nonsense’, she’s SO adorable!

*Ahem* Sorry, sorry, I sorta lost focus. Still, I love these additions to your AU, which is so gratifyingly…well, metal. Like for instance, Bobipsa. The idea of approaching the ‘evil robot mom’ arch-type at a whole different angle from your previous post is intriguing but especially engaging when you consider that her being ‘broken’ makes her a hell of a lot more human in some ways demonstrated here. Maybe that’s a little strong, but compared to both the show’s representation as well as your own expansion upon that canon ideal, Bobipsa appears to me to rank a lot higher on preferable mother figures in Mewni (be it AU or canon…).

I mean, her design still has that retro-futuristic finish in the shape and form, but what was replaced, repaired, and significantly improved upon by her new goals and perspectives on life. The deep crimson red really suits that new look, and everything from the cable-laden ‘dreadlocks’, the thorny ‘crown’, and the sharper ‘toothed’ mouth grill, gives her ‘natural’ air of authority and power a much more Robot Hellish vibe, and that works, especially for someone to have build the leather-bound and wearing robot guards and goons, and stand out as the one ruling the pack at the rise of their infamy.

And yet despite the extreme metal makeover, the insides count just as the outsides, and the ruptured programming and parameters driving Bobipsa maybe of very questionable logic, but it did prove, in a very unexpected but profitably petty way (Ha, take that Shastay McNastay), the best for Meteora in this timeline. I mean again, just looking at the little ‘meatloaf’…only a couple of panels and I can feel this is far more loving (at least from Meteora to Bobipsa, at first) relationship between hostage and kidnapper…I mean, charge and caretaker. Although I’m sure there was griping about meatloaf ‘juice’ ruining her new red finish (what is it with Butterflys’ and their need to chew on pointy, dangerous objects…? It seems like a pretty reoccurring trait~).

And that leap forward in time, oh, your spin on that moment in time with a young Meteora coming into her own, and trying to find her look with help from Bobipsa…that right there, is the most heartwarmingly metal moment I’ve ever seen. The studded spiked tail bracelets really completes the look…and I feel absolutely no pity for the fool who DOESN’T like it and makes that vocal…What does make me feel? Bobipsa’s ‘patpat’ upon that now energized young punk daughter of hers’ head. Awww, its just so sweet…in that dark rebellious way, but still so sweet~.

And those final pages, showing the moment when the relationship between mombot and meatloaf (I’ve really grown to like that ‘pet name’ for lil AU Meteora) changed, there’s just so much to like here. Such as the clear established dynamic between Bobipsa and Gemini, whose design I really like as well, especially his choice in weapon (Oh, it might be my inner horror movie/video game nerd projecting super hard here, but I would LOVE to know what inspired you with this AU Gemini~).

And the sense of color with the heavy use of yellow (much like how red and purple was so eye catching and effective when put to subdued shades of gray, I love that!) to be suddenly green-shifted for but one moment, really sells how even at a young age, a very sleepy and cranky tot Meteora is a force to be reckoned with…and that Bobipsa DOES have a heart! Oh, the range of expressions in that final panel are just the best, even with the background goons as they clearly have no idea what just happened…and that is the best.

Its so great to learn more and see this world slowly expand and get such captivating concepts and lore with this Metal AU =D. Such fantastic artwork accompanying a very catchy read, and I’m left eager for more. Great stuff, Calisto!

Bobipsa spent quite a long time in the landfill, trying to understand why she was unable to perform her task, and came to conclusion that it wasn’t her, who was “defective” it was user’s settings, and the people that had put in her a certain task. In other words, if we assume that robo-mothers like “Olga” are “the creatures of the function” (created specifically to solve certain task of a certain user), then Bobipsa, partially returned to the “factory settings” and found the discrepancy with the “users settings” and therefore stared questioning the adequacy of those who set her a task (simle example – as if the toaster realized that instead of frying bread, the user fried lamb ribs in it that caused toster to breake). After understanding that, she began to change, because she had a desire (a new task she had given to herself) to “update” those “users” who “solve the problem” (raising children) in different way as it was specified in robo-mother’s “factory settings”.

However, if we talk about her as a “living person”, then she, in fact, had experienced “the destruction of authority”. The main rule - “The customer is always right” (that hammered into the head of all robo-mothers) was a lie, and therefore it is impossible for her now to follow it. However, it was only an initial push. Her further desire to fulfill her task and new ability to doubt in “users”, led to the development of real living character (in fact, she became a “user” – able to set tasks and conditions for their solution herself).

That small Meteora/Heinous was caught by the similarity of the names “Eclipsa” and “Bobipsa”, and some similar features in the look of robo-mother and monster cub (the fangs and toothy grille, horns and fragments of the frame on the head, tail and charging cord,e.t.c.). That’s why young Heinous/Meteora trusted Bobipsa and began to consider her as her mother really fast.

(because there was way more people who wanted to harm Hein than to invite her to a ball.)

«Such as the clear established dynamic between Bobipsa and Gemini, whose design I really like as well, especially his choice in weapon (Oh, it might be my inner horror movie/video game nerd projecting super hard here, but I would LOVE to know what inspired you with this AU Gemini~)». - Something tells me that you already know what kind of game this references to). And if you not - the garden scissors in Gemini’s hads are kind of curtsey in the direction of Scissorman from the “Clock Tower” game (A great horror and a great character).

I really do enjoy how this AU could be observed as the dark, scarred side of the coin which bares Olga, given how both models approach their ‘duties’ oh so differently. Especially when we draw back towards the matter of internal programming and ‘user settings’. It is an approach that I can appreciate from a classic sci-fi standpoint, as I know I’ve used Asimov in an earlier repost but its certainly applicable here, as Bobipsa’s logical conclusion to the ‘defective’ nature of the world is what led to her fate in the junkyard, it would become clear that the world is what needs to be restored to ‘factory settings’, and not her. And with her programming as conflicted as it is, its hard to argue that its ‘not’ the correct solution…especially with this ‘world’ as it is, it could use with plenty of re-programming…well, I mean without using brain washing technology to do it, but ‘re-programmed’ nonetheless. The steps it took to give her a sense of being and ‘sentience’ is also surprisingly logical and not born out of emotion, but from its ‘deviancy’ from the correct path is what lead to some semblance of emotion…and I really appreciate how that all came together, very easy to follow and grasp!

I can’t help but picture your points over the bonding between Bobipsa and a very young Meteora appealing as it reminds me of old documentaries concerning rescued baby animals who’re having trouble being fed or cared for, using mechanical surrogates or facsimiles that are in the general shape or looks of their species, allowing for easier care. Likely not the most flattering comparison to compare Meteora to an animal, but how similar Bobipsa and Meteora share in physical characteristics, I couldn’t resist seeing that parallel. Especially with how quick Meteora took to Bobipsa…I mean, the chewing and drooling during those real early years was out of affection, CLEARLY…good thing Gemini was there less things got really messy…

And speaking of Gemini in this AU, I’m EXTREMELY pleased to know that his weapon of choice was inspired by the Scissor Man. It fits so very well, both in terms of its users (small, often hunch backed, disfigured, lot of shared characteristics here) as well as how important scissors are in the SVTFOE franchise, so having a massive pair of scissors that may or may not be used to open up rips in reality? Super useful to have around!

I’d love to see more of this AU in the future, both for more of ‘Meteora’s rise’ (heh, punny~) in Bobipsa’s care as well as what other divergences may take place in the greater scale of the worlds within this AU. It has so much style and appeal to me on many levels, as a fan of the show, a fan of inspired visuals and, a fan of alternate universe concepts. This has all that and more, and I can’t resist wanting to see more of it~. Just, thanks so much for further expanding on it and thank you again for all the tags and thank yous.
